Work Experience 2021-22
As part of our career’s information, advice and guidance, this summer marks the return of our Work Experience programme for Year 10 & Year 12.
The work experience placements run across a full week and we are happy to confirm that the dates for this academic year are:
Year 10 Work Experience Dates – Monday 27 June- Friday 1 July 2022 (Term 6)
Year 12 Work Experience Dates – Monday 4 July – Friday 8 July 2022 (Term 6)
For both year groups it is an expectation that all students will have a work experience placement to attend.
The work experience placement, is designed to give students an opportunity to gain the experience of working life, develop employability skills, along with key soft skills & transferable skills. The week also builds students confidence to thrive in a work place environment. In order to provide a meaningful experience of work, Brixham College uses the support services of Careers Southwest (CSW Ltd). It is through CSW that we gain access to their list of employers in Torbay as well as those in neighbouring South Hams and Devon. It is CSW who also ensures that the employers hold all the relevant Health & Safety certifications along with assessments of the employer’s duty of care, and wellbeing of all our students.
Additional information about Careers Southwest can be found using the following link:
Our Work Experience Programme that supports and prepares our students for their working week, begins with a Work Experience Questionnaire. This questionnaire allows us to assess which of the employability skills the student wants to focus on and develop during work experience, as well as highlighting what possible career pathways they are considering currently. Students also highlight 3 possible fields of work that they would like to gain experience in.
Over the coming months, students will gain Values sessions that are set aside to prepare students for their working week. In addition, Year 10 & Y12 will received a Focused Learning Day (FLD), that will provide students will the skills and attributes that our employers will expect to see from their allocated work experience student.
During the students work experience week, students will receive a well-being check carried out by a member of the Brixham College staff.
To ensure that students maximise their experience and learning, all students will be expected to complete a “skills experienced & developed audit” each day (electronic), and will complete the week with a profile of their employer and the work they have undertaken during their week.
