During her visit, students eagerly asked her questions on topics ranging from wildlife conservation to the inner workings of Westminster.
One student asked: “What are your views on the conservation of wildlife in the local area?”
Ms Voaden responded: “It is really important; climate change goes hand in hand with protecting nature.”
The students also gained a better understanding of the ways in which Parliament debates and legislates on key national issues. They learned how MPs represent their constituents’ interests and how the laws passed in Parliament impact local communities like Brixham.
While much of the visit focused on parliamentary discussions, Ms Voaden also took the time to discuss the school’s SEND provision and its dedicated Harbour facility, designed to support students with autism.
To conclude the visit, Ms Voaden met with the Head Student Team and members of the Student School Parliament, who represent their peers from Years 7 to 13.
Principal, Mark Eager reflected on the visit: “We are so grateful to Caroline for taking the time to visit our school and meet our students. We want every student to feel empowered, whether it is in the classroom, in leadership roles, or in their understanding of how they can make a difference.”
On Facebook, Ms Voaden said: “It was good to hear about their Harbour facility for students with autism and the challenges they are facing around funding, SEND provision and the ongoing debate about why chips are only allowed on Fridays - and even then without salt! School really isn’t what it was in my day.”
